Attention cartoonists! During Heroes Dutch Comic Con, cartoonists get the chance to break through as a professional comic artist. None other than Marvel Comics editor Alanna Smith will be looking at the artwork of aspiring comic artists during the portfolio reviews. Dutch drawing talent gets a unique opportunity to work for the mother of comics: Marvel Comics!

During the portfolio review, cartoonists get a unique opportunity to present their work to an editor of a renowned comic book publisher. During the winter edition of the event, Marvel Comics editor Alanna Smith will take on the task looking for talented comic artists. A selection of her favourite artists will be able to convince her in person of their qualities and try to get an unique chance to get a job for the comic book giant.

The Dutch comic artist Romano Molenaar proves that a portfolio review can mean your big breakthrough. After handing over his portfolio to an editor of an American publisher in 1996, he got the opportunity to start to work almost immediately. Since then he has worked for many major comic book publishers, including Marvel Comics and DC Comics. “It is crucial to present your work during a portfolio review, both for the development of your talent and your career. You will receive immediate feedback on your work and know what is expected of you as a comic artist. Leave a positive impression and don’t take a defensive attitude when they criticize your artwork. Listen to the editor and take their advice to heart,” advises Romano. “Attending portfolio reviews has opened the doors for me to publishers like Marvel Comics and DC Comics. It’s possible, so go for it!”

Alanna Smith is an editor at Marvel Comics and has been part of the Marvel Comics team for four years. With her background in illustration and writing she is a real asset to the publishing company. Smith is mainly responsible for Avengers related titles. She is currently working on Ms. Marvel, Captain America and Iron Man. She supports her colleagues with the biggest titles, including Avengers: Standoff, Civil War II and most recently the 80-year anniversary issue Marvel Comics 1000.

Alanna Smith will be present at Heroes Dutch Comic Con both days to take a closer look at the portfolios. Only portfolios that are made according to the rules will be accepted. A participation in the portfolio review is no guarantee for a meeting with Alanna. Read more about the rules and portfolio reviews.
